Building Better Futures: 360°kids’ Black Youth Housing Project
The Problem: A Stark Reality
Black youth are significantly overrepresented among those experiencing homelessness, and this disparity is especially evident in York Region. While Black youth make up less than 3% of the York Region population, they accounted for a striking 13% and 10% of youth experiencing homelessness in the 2018 and 2021 York Region Point in Time counts, respectively. This overrepresentation is a critical issue that our organization, 360°kids, is actively addressing through our Black Youth Housing Project.
Moving Towards a Framework to Address Black Youth Homelessness
For over 35 years, 360°kids has been a pillar of support for youth in York Region. Our Black Youth Housing Project, launched with the support of United Way Greater Toronto and the Government of Canada, focuses on providing affordable transitional housing tailored to the unique needs of Black youth. This initiative is guided by culturally relevant practices and a deep understanding of the systemic barriers Black youth face.
What We’ve Learned So Far
Our research has revealed the critical need for culturally relevant services and the importance of creating a safe, affirming environment where Black youth can thrive. This project has been a collaborative effort, supported by invaluable community partnerships and insights from Black-focused organizations.
Looking Ahead, and Bridging the Gap
As we continue to develop and refine our approach, we are committed to creating housing solutions that not only address homelessness but also empower Black youth to achieve their full potential. Our vision is to inspire similar initiatives across Canada, creating a future where every youth has the opportunity to thrive.
